Summer Student Fellowship 2024 at WHOI Apply Now

The Summer Student Fellowship 2024 at WHOI offers a unique opportunity for aspiring marine scientists and engineers to engage in transformative research experiences. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is excited to announce that applications for the Summer Student Fellowship for the year 2024 are now open! This unique fellowship opportunity is designed for undergraduate students who have completed their junior year, offering them a chance to immerse themselves in cutting-edge research during the last summer of their undergraduate studies.

Eligibility and Fields of Study: The fellowship is open to students from diverse scientific and engineering backgrounds, including biology, chemistry, engineering, geology, mathematics, meteorology, physics, oceanography, and marine policy. Applicants must have a tentative interest in ocean sciences, oceanographic engineering, or marine policy.

Furthermore, WHOI encourages applications from members of groups underrepresented in ocean science and engineering, fostering diversity and inclusivity in marine research.

Application Requirements: To apply, interested students need to complete an online application form, which includes:

  1. A current CV or resume showcasing educational background and work experience.
  2. A current unofficial transcript (official transcript required for selected applicants).
  3. Two letters of recommendation from professors or other individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic credentials.
  4. Responses to short essay questions within the application.

Essay Questions: Applicants are required to answer several short essay questions, including:

  • How would a summer of research at WHOI benefit your education and career goals? (250 words max)
  • What qualities and characteristics will you bring to our program as a result of your life experiences, jobs, and/or other activities? (200 words max)
  • Have you previously been involved in research or other projects, and how have you applied your skills or knowledge to solve a problem? (200 words max)
  • What areas of marine research are you interested in and why? (200 words max)
  • Optional: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself? (200 words max)

Application Deadline and Notification: The deadline for submitting completed applications is 11:59 pm EST on February 5, 2024. Applicants will be notified of decisions in mid-March. Successful candidates have until March 15th or later to accept or reject the offer.
